Our PENINSULA is a development / improvement of a series of LIES that IKEA's then chief designer Gillis Lundgren, developed for production at sawmills in northern Sweden in solid pine in the 50s. IKEA sold large volumes of pine, but it disappeared from the range in the 80s for unknown reasons.

In 2012, IKEA asked us to develop something similar in Akazia hardwood, which we did and delivered 18 containers to them under the name HELNÄS and then oiled in our Golden Teak hard wax oil.

Ingvar Kamprad was always of the opinion that before sending designers to a furniture fair for inspiration for a new product, you should first check in the Treasury. The treasury at IKEA means former IKEA catalogs. That's how HELNÄS came about with inspiration from LJUGEN, for which we only changed the name to PENINSULA, as this is our own development. "The chair with Pride but improved" as they also said within IKEA if someone claimed that they copied.

HELNÄS became IKEA's first outdoor furniture manufactured with glue joint technology. We still use the same flexible glue in production, which, like chewing gum, moves in step with the wood's changes due to temperature and humidity. An ordinary glue, if also classified for the outdoors, would give open glue joints when used in the Nordic climate for many years, which is why we chose this flexible variant.
